G.J. Hodson:

A ONCE AND FUTURE
CARE PARTNER

Pronouns: he/they/she

The youngest and possibly only LGBTQ+ dementia care expert in the U.S. with both caregiving and research experience, G.J. spent his early 30s as a solo, 24/7 dementia care partner for his adoptive grandfather. By the time their grandfather passed away, G.J. was volunteering as a support group facilitator and earning a Master’s in Sociology at Texas Woman’s University. G.J. graduated into a pandemic and expanded her support groups by taking them online, becoming a highly sought virtual educator on LGBTQ+ care experiences; during this time, she also published research exploring generational variation in care and documenting her life and relationship with gender since caregiving.

G.J.’s attention to underserved communities led to a greater and more diverse body of work: intergenerational storytelling panels, presentations on identity and community-building, and facilitated discussions with care professionals on how we confront systemic inequalities within our work. G.J. is especially proud of naming and presenting for the Alzheimer’s Association‘s annual “Caring for Our Own” LGBTQ+ Caregiver Seminars (2021-2023) and being named a 2022 Caregiver Fellow by Caring Across Generations.

G.J. Hodson was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, a working class white kid with a “cheat-code” into the middle class via the generous adoptive grandparents he would later care for. G.J. earned a Bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing from New York University and an eclectic resume featuring very little writing: they have delivered logistics for a Ford Foundation grant award program, scares in a haunted house, communications in political campaigns, and even a bit of relationship coaching. She now builds virtual community and listens to music in her grandparents’ old house, along with chosen family (two humans, two irascible birds) and a wide selection of favorite teas.

Consulting a nationwide network of care experts and service providers, G.J. innovates virtual programs for professionals and community members alike and specializes in highlighting the growing contributions of underserved, over-represented care partners: LGBTQ+ folks, young adults, communities of color, and chosen families.

Relaunching Theories of Care as a consulting facilitator, researcher, and strategist in 2023, G.J. continues to address care and community challenges at the micro- and meso-levels. From university classrooms and nationwide datasets to Employee Resource Groups and families in crisis, G.J. helps institutions and individuals build a future that is informed, just, and caring.
